David Ortiz for MVP August 8, 2006Posted by Administrator in Sports.
Originally said by Scoop Jackson -usually a notorious, race-based columnist- here. I rarely agree with Scoop, but if Ortiz at least keeps from screwing things up these next two months, he absolutely deserves the MVP.
The most telling stat?
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since the start of the 2004 postseason, Ortiz has come to the plate in 19 walk-off situations. And he has successfully reached base 16 times, hitting 11-for-14 with seven home runs.
For those of you not familiar with baseball, those stats, especially the bold one, are absolutely and completely sick. A real strong hitter is expected to get a base hit 33% of the time. Ortiz -known as Big Papi to Red Sox fans- is hitting an utterly unconscious .785 in situations where his getting a base hit would win the game for the Sox. 79% of the time. Unheard of. Unconscious.
And absolutely beyond value to the Red Sox, the denizens of Fenway Park, and every Yankee hater in the nation (including me).
David Ortiz for MVP. The time has come.
