Pain August 16, 2006Posted by Administrator in Catholicism, Family, Personal.
Boy, I thought I knew what pain was all about.
Then I got hit -very suddenly- this evening by a kidney stone. Utterly and completely distracting. Thank GOD for drugs. they gave me a shot of Dilaudid and that did wonders for the pain. . but first was 30 minutes of undiluted, groaning misery. Apparently some women claim kidney stones are worse than labor.
Not having been through labor, I can’t compare. . .but it surely does give further empathy for laboring mothers. Pain is a remarkably clarifying event in one’s life.
Yes, I’m still looping on the Dilaudid, so this post is sure to ramble.
Mu daughter was celebrating her 15th birthday here with a bunch of friends. . .as my concerned wife bundled me into the car to take me to the ER. I tried to smile and look relaxed. <Monica later suggested that I looked frail.
My wife was a HUGE support. A great illustration of “for better or worse.” I was worse in this case. . .and she was right there the whole time.
And I kept thinking as I squirmed in pain “God, at least make use of this for someone else’s benefit.”
And that little mantra did help.
