Am I the only one who finds the title of Al Gore’s new book, The Assault on Reason vastly, almost cosmically ironic?
Atheist makes huge donation to NY Catholic Schools May 25, 2007Posted by Administrator in atheism, Catholicism, Humor.
May 23 (Bloomberg) — Philanthropist and retired hedge-fund manager Robert W. Wilson said he is giving $22.5 million to the Archdiocese of New York to fund a scholarship program for needy inner-city students attending Roman Catholic schools.
Wilson, 80, said in a phone interview today that although he is an atheist, he has no problem donating money to a fund linked to Catholic schools.
“Let’s face it, without the Roman Catholic Church, there would be no Western civilization,” Wilson said. “Shunning religious organizations would be abhorrent. Keep in mind, I’m helping to pay tuition. The money isn’t going directly to the schools.”
Wilson’s donation is the largest the archdiocese has ever received. The money will be used to fund the Cardinal’s Scholarship Program, which was started in 2005 to give disadvantaged students attending the archdiocese’s inner-city schools partial or full tuition grants, Jacqueline LoFaro, the archdiocese’s associate superintendent of schools, said in a phone interview today.
“It was a chance for a very modest amount of money to get kids out of a lousy school system and into a good school system,” Wilson said.
Apparently, the man is a walking contradiction. He is atheist, yet fails to hew the Party Dawkobot Line that All of Christianity is Forever Evil and Contributed Nothing to Civilization. I expect Myers will rescind Wilson’s membership in the Almighty Church of the Great Dawkins any day now.

In which etymology and Brian convict me May 22, 2007Posted by Administrator in Blogging.
Amanda Marcotte is not a hypocrite. She simply employs a double standard on all things Republican. So perhaps nouns such as weasel, snake and double-dealer apply better.
Whether this renders her somehow better than a hypocrite is highly debatable; and given the usual connotation of hypocrite, I am still unsure that the label does not apply.

At 40 games, the M’s are two games under .500, 19-21. They did a valiant job in keeping up the pace with their ace, Felix Hernandez, down with an arm ailment.
Line-up: A. Kenji Johjima. He’s hitting .310, numerous clutch hits and RBIs. Excellent pay-off for the former #7 hitter.
Bs: Yuniesky Betancourt, Jose Lopez. The inside of the infield is doing a fine job at the plate, hitting .269 and .256 respectively. Betancourt also is shwoing some flashes of power. If he can keep the Ks down, will have a good year.
Ichiro: Hitting “only” .329.
Jose Vidro: .309. Much, much better than I was anticipating.
Adrian Beltre. Hitting .248, and has never delivered on his NL promise. reminds me if Kevin Mitchell. A “C” may be generous.
Jose Guillen: .273. not lighting the park on fire.
D-: Richie Sexson. A swing that takes over 15 seconds to finish. Hitting .172. His only saving grace is that he is on pace for 100 RBIs. Great. And hitting below the Mendoza line. Has cost us numerous ballgames already.
Overall line-up deserves a C-. Not providing the runs when necessary.
Pitching: Starters: Solid C+, mainly due to their holding things up while Hernandez was down. Now that King Felix is back, they appear to be letting down. But Baek, Ramirez and Batista still look very suspect, and I fear this grade will drop over time. Washburn can be effective; he needs to be stellar.
Hernandez himself. B. Unstoppable before his injury. Since his return, 0-1 and an increasing ERA.
Special citation: Jeff Weaver. F. Both he and Bill Bavasi need to be taken to the glue factory and rendered down to their component parts; Weaver should hang his head in shame for daring to accept this contract, and Bavasi would flunk the Wonderlic if this signing were any criteria of native intelligence.
Bullpen: B+. Promising. JJ Putz as the closer is automatic. George Sherrill, Eric o’Flaherty, Jason Davis and Sean White are all solid in relief. Brandon Morrow is potentially a break-out given his youth.
Overall: C+. Better than expected, but can and must go farther then they have. Cannot afford an extended losing streak.

. . .that caters to one of PZ’s greatest hobby horses; physicians that choose to not believe in evolution therefore make bad doctors.
The student then goes onto his blog to crow and thank his benefactors (one of whom is none other than PZ, whattacoincidence).
Ok, I know this post is getting kinda long, so I’ll cap up by saying, I love you all! Oh yeah, and there’s also my teacher to thank, Ms. Chung (who I then spent a week with in Costa Rica, which was a very good break from this). She helped revise and polish the essay, which I think made a huge difference.
Mm hm. Am I the only one who is troubled by a student spending a week in Costa Rica with his teacher to “modify an essay”?
Watch out, PZ, or else you might find yourself getting tarred with that same brush you so love to wield against Catholics.
Here’s the essay itself. Interesting to note that it is nothing more than an opinion piece, and one that upholds the notion that if you dare go against Scared (sic, on purpose) Scripture in Science, be it AGW or Evolution, you too can be branded a heretic. No citations, just a ranting of the standard Party Line.
Yep. That’s modern science. How comforting.
I mean, really.
Ted Klaudt, 49, a Republican rancher from Walker, faces a long list of charges: eight counts of rape, two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, two counts of witness tampering, sexual contact with a person under 16, and stalking….
In the most disturbing accusation, the girls say Klaudt had them convinced they could earn up to $20,000 by donating their eggs to a fertility clinic. And even though he has no medical training, the girls say Klaudt did all the supposed “exams” and “procedures” himself.
Naturally, he’s a Republican.
Now look. I’m not going to sit here and defend Klaudt. I have little difficulty imagining that the man had trouble keeping his hands to himself. This seems to be a problem that many men who lust for power have. They also lust after domination; voters, little girls, aides, whomever.
But don’t tell me that this pathology is confined to the Right.
Ever hear of an Arkansas hillbilly by the name of Bill Clinton that enjoyed absuing his office so he could sodomize fat young interns?
You’re a hypocrite, Amanda.
Meanwhile, noted Organic Brain Damage victim Myers weighs in, now criticizing all South Dakotans. What a twit.
