Trimming the blogroll(s) August 31, 2007Posted by Administrator in Blogging.
It’s getting bloated, as far as I am concerned. So I am trimming it down a little bit, trying to keep in only for those sites that either:
- I receive links/visits from
- I regularly visit
- Stats show that what readership is here clicks on as well
The rest are going (it’s not much). If for some reason you think it should have stayed (like it’s your blog and you still want to see the link up) post a comment or shoot me an e-mail (email@example.com) and I’ll restore it.

While perusing her latest foamage, I see on the sidebar an ad for this little outfit.
It took me awhile to wrap my head around this. It turns out that JohnQ TV is a wireless internet service that provides cable TV and movie access aimed directly at men. The quote:
Movies, TV and Video for Men.
The actual ad showed a female torso, from roughly the bottom of her ribcage to about midway down her thigh, in profile with posterior turned towards the front. This particular torso was clad only in the briefest of bikini thong briefs. (NO I will not link a picture.)
This, on Pandagon, run by perhaps the most foamingly radical and pathological feminist out there. She has sold the sidebar of her site to a men’s soft-core porn service, one designed to further the decidedly anti- feminist goal of reducing women down to the level of sex objects.
Do I detect a clueless irony at work here? Or a more fundamental hypocrisy?

OK. This could get sensitive. I ask any readers out there to bear with me and be patient.
I stumbled across a post today where a female blogger mentioned -somewhat en passant- that she had been sexually assaulted in the past.
It took me a week to admit I’d been sexually assaulted after I was, and I was lucky to have friends at the time use words like “molested” and “rape” to put my head on straight. I think sometimes I have something about me that just attracts bullies, since I’ve been fending them off in one form or another my whole life. At 20 years old, I was still holding out the vague hope that since high school was over, I had reached a free-and-clear-from-bullies point in my life. Making it harder was the very many times that I had personally witnessed when this guy had a chance to assault other women and hadn’t, making me think he was alright. But I apparently attract bullies. I didn’t want to admit that I had been a victim, because I felt sometimes like I had a target on my back.
Now, not a whole heckuvalot of info is provided about what happened and why. And you know what? I don’t think that the woman has to provide it. She claims she was assaulted? Fine. I’ll accept the claim prima facie. While I do know that false claims occur on occasion, it is also my firm belief that there are far more cases of unreported assaults than there are false reports. I base this belief on the fact that I am a member of Clan Male, and that a great number of my brethren frankly suck at treating women with proper dignity and respect when it comes to their wishes regarding sexuality. I’ve seen the wreckage that was left over of a good friend of mine from college who had been serially abused as a teenager, and my own wife has to struggle with issues stemming from instances of men treating her as an object while in her teens and early twenties.
So, the woman above deserves at least to have her claim considered as valid. That said, the twit who did this to her deserves time in lock-up; his treatment of her is inexcusable and actionable.
That said, here’s the link.
Yes. That same Amanda Marcotte, she of the fulminating, pathological feminism, is a victim of sexual abuse.
Do we now have an explanation for her foaming rants and irrational screeds? I would say we do.
And I roundly condemn the asshole who abused Ms. Marcotte even further, for putting an otherwise intelligent young woman so far around the bend that she now sees masculine conspiracies under every rock, and transformed her otherwise useful pen into an implement of destructive poison.
I have little doubt that Marcotte would absolutely blast me as an ignorant wingnut for daring to suggest that the roots of her malign feminazism are anything other than simon-pure, but the realities of psychopathology suggest otherwise. We are creatures of our genetics and our environment; and here it seems that Ms. Marcotte has been shaped in a painful and unpleasant way by an unloving environment. Her rage against her attacker is used to attack ALL men, thereby doing her -and men- as well as her sycophantic followers a grave disservice.
The asshole is at fault for twisting Amanda in such a way, and Amanda herself is also at fault for calling the twistedness a form of health, and stubbornly sticking with that.

. . .and consequently, so has the weariness factor.
Coupled with the fact that my work computer went belly-up two days before school started, swallowing four years of collected work on its way down into the depths AND eliminating my access to student grade and info databases -thereby giving me a TON of additional work just to get back to square one- there won’t be a whole lotta blogging going on, at least not until I get this ancient laptop up to speed and get my stamina back.
All I want to do now when I get home is go to sleep.
And the homework hasn’t even really started yet.
At least my students are pleasant, for the most part. I kinda have to be nasty with my son’s class. . .he has some world-class knotheads in there, resulting in my being a lot less fun and a lot more cranky in the classroom. Oh well. Such is the teaching life.
And the hard-disk data WAS retrieved, thanks for asking. My four years of work is back in a safe area of cyberspace.
Robert Heinlein on Environmentalism August 25, 2007Posted by Administrator in Environmentalism, Smart People.
There are hidden contradictions in the minds of people who “love Nature” while deploring the “artificialities” with which “Man has spoiled ‘Nature.'” The obvious contradiction lies in their choice of words, which imply that Man and his artifacts are not part of “Nature” — but beavers and their dams are. But the contradictions go deeper than this prima-facie absurdity. In declaring his love for a beaver dam (erected by beavers for beavers’ purposes) and his hatred for dams erected by men (for the purposes of men) the Naturist reveals his hatred for his own race — i.e., his own self-hatred.
In the case of “Naturists” such self-hatred is understandable; they are such a sorry lot. But hatred is too strong an emotion to feel toward them; pity and contempt are the most they rate.
As for me, willy-nilly I am a man, not a beaver, and H. sapiens is the only race I have or can have. Fortunately for me, I like being part of a race made up of men and women — it strikes me as a fine arrangement — and perfectly “natural” Believe it or not, there were “Naturists” who opposed the first flight to old Earth’s Moon as being “unnaturaI” and a “despoiling of Nature.
Well, I’ve been thinking this to some degree for years now. . .but I see that RAH had beaten me to it. What a brilliant iconoclast the man was.
In which the tribulations of Myers should have me absolutely shivering with glee. . . August 21, 2007Posted by Administrator in Blogging, Idiots, Pharyngulism.

. . .but alas, they do not.
Noted blogtwit PZ Myers is being sued by a wealthy New York businessman, Stuart Pivar. Seems that Pivar wrote a book some time ago that Myers savagely trashed not once but twice. Pivar claims that Myers descended into malicious libel, claiming that PZ called Pivar a “crackpot”. (Pot, meet kettle. . .)
Now, Myers is not helping himself, as he is opening his mouth again while being sued, commenting on material relevant to the suit (bad, bad idea):
Since I’m a blogger, though, I can’t completely shut up (we’ve known this for some time -Admin). I will just say that this is Pivar’s attempt to squash a negative review of his book, which I posted here. Nothing in the review was motivated by personal malice, and I actually am inclined to favor structuralist arguments in evolution … but I’m afraid my honest assessment of Pivar’s work is that it does not support his conclusions. I still stand by my review, and now I’m a bit disturbed that someone would think criticism of a scientific hypothesis must be defended by silencing its critics.
The man simply does not know when to shut his foaming gob. Even his noted (and often rational) sycophant Blake Stacey is telling Myers to be quiet.
Prof. Myers’ wisest course of action may be to “shut up,”
Indeed. But something deep inside me tells me that he is too stubborn and stupid to do so.
All that said, and much as I take non-Christian delight in seeing Myers squirm. . .
I am going to have to go out on the ramparts and state that Pivar’s suit appears to be badly formulated, frivolous and counter-productive. I have three large objections:
- Pivar has named Seed magazine as a co-defendant, apparently for giving Myers his forum at Pharyngula. I hate to see Seed penalized, as it also sponsors such goodness as Cognitive Daily. Just because Myers is an idiot doesn’t mean that all of his fellow sciencebloggers are likewise idiots.
- There’s damn little room for a claim of libel here. Myers is certainly malicious in much of what he says, but it is damned near impossible to prove that what he foams on about in Pharyngula as being libelous from a legal standpoint. Additionally, Pivar is a public figure, and that fact makes it even more difficult to prove libel.
- Finally, it appears to me that Pivar is bent out of shape because Myers didn’t like his book, and consequently is trying to silence a critic. Using the tort system to silence a critic, if successful, presents ominous overtones for the ongoing health of the First Amendment. Pivar may have a point; but this is not the way to go about arguing it.
So, much to my sadness, I have to side -however reluctantly- with PZ on this one. I would like to see that this might inject a badly and long-overdue dose of humility into PZ; but that ain’t gonna happen.
What’s worse, once this is thrown out of court, Myers will strut about with increased arrogance and self-righteousness, becoming even more unbearably pompous, if that were even possible.

. . .OK, so what I said earlier stands: He needs to do prison time, pay a huge fine, and if possible, be banned from playing in the NFL again. I’m all for these consequences. Dogfighting is disgusting.
Now, when are we going to go after rape suspects like we did with Vick? This has still not been answered to my satisfaction.
A GOOD ScienceBlog August 18, 2007Posted by Administrator in Blogging, Science.
I spend a great deal of time in here slamming PZ Myers and his faith-based reliance upon science and his equally faith-based hatred of all things faith-based. Ironic, and twisted, I know. Myers’ wretched blog is found within the greater domain of scienceblogs.com. A quick perusal of the place will find many sundry blogs, some good, some bad, and some wretched. Myers fits in the wretched.
In the good category -based on one series of visits- is Dave and Greta Munger’s Cognitive Daily. It appears to be just chock full of goosies, reasonable reports and insights, and (hopefully) is devoid of the lock-step, fundamentalist materialism that plagues PZ. The Mungers do eat with PZ, which causes a bit of concern (joke). We’ll keep looking at it, but from what I have seen, science readers out there need to drink this little blog in.
