Your Tax Dollars at Work May 21, 2008

The tragedy that is Myanmar (formerly, Burma). Massive cyclone/typhoon/hurricane smacks the Southeast Asian country, causing the sea to inundate the fertile Irrawaddy River delta, salinating and  therefore ruining millions of acres of farmland. Then, to make matters worse, the military junta that “rules” this desperate land will accept aid but not the aid workers, as the aid workers might actually see some signs that the junta consists of idiots, thereby opening up the junta to some well-deserved criticism. Meanwhile, the people continue to suffer.

But never fear. Your intrepid United Nations is standing by to cure all ills, as only it can, in its own inimitable style. With an infrastructure in ruins, little access to food or clean water, in short, a tragedy of epic proportion in the making, your remarkable UN steps into the breach by providing:

Wait for it.

220,000 condoms.

Bangkok – The United Nations will send nearly a quarter of a million condoms into cyclone-hit Myanmar to help needy survivors with no access to contraceptives, a UN official says.

So far, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) said it had sent 72 800 condoms to survivors struggling to maintain their family planning after the storm hit in early May.

A total of 218 400 condoms would be delivered, UNFPA aid advisor Chaiyos Kunanusont said.

“We don’t want regular use of contraception disrupted. An emergency usually damages the health system, so people don’t have access to condoms and contraceptives,” said Chaiyos.

Hm. Yes. Never mind the food, the water, the military ineptitude and the health care crisis. Let’s make sure that Teh Seks is still “protected.”

The United Nations, ladies and gentlemen. Accept no substitute.

Well, really, we couldn’t have all those third world citizens reproducing. They might create a threat to the stability and infrastructure of international aid organizations such as the UN. Just think how much easier it would be to supply food and water to the citizens of Burma if the population, were, say, an eighth of the current size!

Table for one (million) please, do you have anything by the ring of fire?

2. Sophist FCD - June 4, 2008

You’re right, it’s just totally unconscionable that the U.N. isn’t doing anything but passing out condo…hey, what’s that over there?

“A total of 1.3 million survivors have been reached with assistance by local and international humanitarian groups, the Red Cross and the U.N.”

“The junta, which explicitly rejected the use of foreign military helicopters in the relief effort, still has not authorized the entry of nine civilian helicopters flying on behalf of the U.N. World Food Program, though they have been sitting in neighboring Thailand since last week.”

“Restrictions on visa and travel permission for foreign workers, as well as on entry of some equipment, continue to hamper the aid effort, despite a pledge made almost two weeks ago by junta leader Senior Gen. Than Shwe to U.N. Secretary Ban Ki-moon to allow foreign aid workers free access to devastated areas.”

“In a report circulated Wednesday, it cited an assessment by the U.N. Children’s Fund _ UNICEF _ of conditions in hard-to-reach areas outside of the town of Bogalay, one of the areas worst affected by the storm.”

Oh. Um…yeah. But other than sending food and transport, negotiating with the junta to loosen aid restrictions, and having boots on the ground checking on the status of remote and hard hit areas, they ain’t done shit. Damn U.N.!

3. Sophist FCD - June 4, 2008

Oh, and I like how you somehow neglected this:

“Flights were also carrying reproductive health kits, which included razors for cutting umbilical cords, clean sheets for delivering babies and enough contraceptive pills and injections to last 3 390 women three months.”

So tell me, The Village Idiot, how does the U.N. taking steps to reduce infant-mortality rates by providing sterile tools fit in with their dastardly plot to stop brown people from multiplying? Maybe those sinister black helicopters the junta won’t let in are involved somehow…

Once again, liberal priorities assert themselves. All of those other items that the UN claim to be doing are of course, gallant and to be applauded. But the distribution of hundreds of thousands of condoms is not, as it is subtracting from that other primary care of which you are so proud. By all means, provide help. But let the liberals make sure that they provide that dose of demeaning hypocrisy as well. Or demeaning self-hatred. Whichever.

5. demolition65 - June 5, 2008

Oh yes, and if we are going to reduce to name calling, stop bothering with commentary. I’ll just delete it. And NO, Gorgas is not “name-calling.” Ancient Greek sophist, as I mentioned some months ago.

6. Sophist FCD - June 5, 2008

What name calling? He posted under the alias “The Village Idiot”. What would you have me call him? And if you take decorum so seriously that you’re going to call me out for that minor perceived slight, you really ought to take TVI to task for accusing thousands of people who are actually out there walking the walk of being racists and eugenicists. Got to maintain civility, right?

But let the liberals make sure that they provide that dose of demeaning hypocrisy as well. Or demeaning self-hatred. Whichever.

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.

7. demolition65 - June 6, 2008

Well, my apologies. I wasn’t paying attention to the fact that you were addressing Alyoshka, who is a woman, by the way.

As for the liberal self-loathing: The entire unspoken message behind the UN and it’s blizzard of condoms is that as humans, we are all beasts. We’re going to fuck, that is all, we cannot help ourselves. The message is one of us as uncontrolled/uncontrollable animals.

I reject that notion. Yet liberals insist on its validity. Humans=animals.

Hence, liberal self-loathing.

8. Sophist FCD - June 6, 2008

Well, my apologies to Alyoshka for misapprehending her gender. My bad.

As for self-loathing, I was pretty sure the bible had a lot to say about humans being incorrigibly sinful, being universally corrupt, being trapped in cages of base and profane flesh, unfit to even think about being in the presence of the divine. No self-loathing there, huh?

Besides, you seem to know better though, because you appear to believe in the perfectibility of humanity.

You know what, forget “humans=animals”, I’ve got another one for you: humans=humans. Regardless of what what you think we are and where you think we come from — whether we’re mere animals, immortal souls, alien science projects, what have you — when you look at what humans do there are certain inescapable conclusions, and one of these is that humans fuck. A lot. In ever time and in every place, human beings have enjoyed sex, and have gone great lengths to practice it. People kill for it. People die for it. People learn which one is the shrimp fork and how to use a finger-bowl for it. No fascist regime, no matter how repressive, has ever been able to control human sexuality, and no program to be implemented now is likely to succeed where they have not. No matter what you and I do, people will continue to pursue sex with the same vigor they always have. That thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done.

So you are right, I do believe that lots of sex in an inevitable part of any human endeavor, not because we are mindless animals, but because we are human beings, with all the agency and will and downright orneriness that that implies. Make of that what you will, but I see nothing worthy of loathing. Just people.

aka, changing the subject, or dodging the question.

you appear to believe in the perfectibility of humanity.

One should keep striving for it. While liberals believe in the perfectibility of government, I believe that humans ought to strive for perfection themselves. Probably won’t ever get there (probably) but the effort should be made.

Meanwhile, liberal efforts at perfecting government only effs things up even worse.

humans fuck. A lot. In ever time and in every place, human beings have enjoyed sex, and have gone great lengths to practice it. People kill for it. People die for it.

Thank you for proving my point. The liberal mentality in all its glory. People will kill and die for it. That is animalism.
